Our new chicks
Posted Friday, April 10, 2009 03:46 PM

My whole life I've always wanted chickens.   But that's sort of hard in the suburbs.   Once we moved up here to 3R, I wanted them even more.   But that would mean building a chicken coop - and we have plenty of work to do without that.   Besides, to buy them mail order means buying a minimum of 25.... a whole lot more that I wanted to start out with.

But last week, we went to our local Tractor Supply Company, and they had baby chicks!   This one batch was 2 weeks old already, so I got 4 chicks for $1 apiece.    I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, one Australorp, and one that the manager said was an Australorp, but I don't think it is.

I'm in 7th heaven.   They're in a cardboard box in my dining room right now, but we'll have to build a coop pretty soon.   They've already figured out how to fly over the edge of the box!

Here's a photo of them!  If you click on it, you can see a bigger picture.

How cute.  The big gray one looks just like Robbie!  I've attached picture of my babies, daughter Lisa & parrot Spanky.

Good lookin', both of 'em!

Tell me more about Spanky, and parrots, in general.

Spanky is a Blue-Fronted Amazon who will live to be 60-100 yrs old.  It was one of the those "can you watch him for a month while I'm moving and getting set-up" things from my wife's son.  That was 5 years ago so now he's my bird.  He loves to take showers, go for rides (especially in our motor home with the big window), eats everything I chew up for him!!  He can speak but usually only when he wants to, loves music and dances to it all the time and has to be part of the crowd if we have friends over - very social and loves women, especially blondes.  Him and the cat talk back to each other - she really doesn't like him and tries to ignore him totally.  I can't believe what a personality he has and he's become my boy.  Pics of this winter in Reno.
